Why Promethean?

Why is the Firm Named “Promethean” Legal Services?

Clients and friends frequently ask about the origin of the name of the law firm. The term “promethean” is derived from the name Prometheus, the Titan from Greek mythology. Titans were a race of powerful and ancient deities who predated the Olympian gods.  Prometheus is often seen as a symbol of intelligence, innovation, and the quest for knowledge, as well as a figure who defied authority for the benefit of humanity. The name “Prometheus” is derived from the Greek words “pro” (before) and “manthano” (to think), often interpreted as “forethought” or “forethinker.”

The most famous myth associated with Prometheus involves him stealing fire from the gods and giving it to humanity. According to the myth, Prometheus took pity on humans who were living in darkness and struggling. He defied Zeus, the king of the gods, by concealing fire within a fennel stalk and presenting it to humans.  This act of defiance angered Zeus.  As punishment, Zeus ordered Prometheus to be chained to a rock, where an eagle would eat his liver every day. Prometheus, however, was immortal, and his liver would regenerate each night, causing him enduring torment. This continued until he was eventually rescued by the hero Heracles, who is better known as “Hercules” in Roman mythology.

Another myth involving Prometheus describes how Zeus decreed that man must present a portion of each animal they scarified to the gods. Prometheus decided to trick Zeus. He created two piles, one with the bones wrapped in juicy fat, while the other pile consisted of the edible parts concealed under the unappetizing skin.   He then bade Zeus to pick.  Zeus picked the bones. Since he had given his word, Zeus had to accept that as his share for all future sacrifices.

The term “promethean” is used to describe qualities or characteristics associated with Prometheus in these and other myths.  The term can be applied to describe creative or innovative endeavors, reflecting Prometheus’ role as a bringer of knowledge and civilization to humanity. It often suggests a forward-thinking and inventive approach.    The term also conveys a sense of unyielding persistence or determination in the face of challenges, similar to how Prometheus endured his punishment for the betterment of humanity.

Our law firm seeks to emulate these attributes of creativity and persistence in the representation of our clients.
